How Sortd ranks energy providers

This page explains how energy plans are ranked, what provider coverage to expect, how commissions are handled, and how savings are calculated.

How rankings work

  • By default, plans are ranked by lowest estimated annual cost for your usage.
  • That estimate uses your energy type, usage, meter setup, and selected region.
  • If two plans are effectively tied on cost, the lower standing charge is shown first.
  • If they are still tied, the lower day rate is shown first, then provider and plan name for a stable order.

Users can also re-sort results by day rate, night rate, or EV rate when that is more relevant to how they shop.

Which suppliers are included

  • Results include the residential suppliers that are currently shown on Sortd's public comparison experience.
  • Some specialist, unsupported, or intentionally hidden tariffs and suppliers may be excluded from public results.
  • Filters can narrow the list further by provider, region, or tariff features like night or EV rates.

Waterpower

Waterpower is included in Sortd's public comparison results.

EcoPower

EcoPower exists in Sortd's internal energy dataset, but it is currently hidden from public comparison results.

Do commissions affect recommendations?

No. Sortd may earn a commission when a user moves forward through some provider journeys, but that does not change the ranking logic. Ranking is based on the methodology above, not on commission.

How savings are calculated

  • We estimate annual cost from unit rates plus standing charges.
  • For electricity, we use your usage split across day, night, peak, weekend, and EV bands where relevant.
  • For gas, we apply the gas unit rate and standing charge to your annual gas usage.
  • The monthly figure shown in results is the annual estimate divided by 12.
  • Each result card includes a “How we calculated this” breakdown so you can inspect the numbers yourself.
